You’ll see how to identify which parts will interchange, so you won’t be confused about what to use and when. BLACK-CONNECTOR SOLENOID BLOCKThe first RFE transmission was the 45RFE, debuting in 1999. By 2001, the 45RFE evolved from a four-speed to a five-speed, referred to as the 545RFE, following computer control modifications. Both versions employed a black-connector solenoid block (figure 1 ABOVE) between 1999 and 2003.Exclusive to the black-connector solenoid block are two components: the transmission range sensor plate . This is not compatible with other solenoid blocks. Consequently, it is advised to consistently transition from the black-connector solenoid block to the white-connector variant. Originally, the black-connector solenoid block was matched with a type-1 transmission range sensor plate ( figure 2 ABOVE). To identify the suitable TRS plate, measure the pocket depth—a precise fit for the black-connector solenoid block is achieved with a depth of 0.118” (3.0mm).WHITE-CONNECTOR SOLENOID BLOCKThe white connector solenoid block ( figure 4 BELOW ) was introduced in 2004 alongside an upgraded version of the transmission range sensor plate, referred to as type 2 (figure 5 BELOW). These solenoid blocks are commonly utilized in vehicles equipped in 545RFE and 68RFE .To distinguish the type-2 transmission range sensor plate, conduct the following measurements: First, assess the pocket depth, which should register at 0.156 inches (approximately 4.0mm). Next, measure the width from the plate's side to the manual valve slot, which should yield a measurement of 0.260 inches (6.6mm).This type-2 plate works with vehicles that display shifter positions P R N D 2 1. What’s different are the manual 2 and manual 1 positions. This changed in later years; we’ll talk about that shortly. The white-connector solenoid block will replace all of the other types of solenoid blocks. You just have to make sure you use the correct transmission range sensor plate: Type 2 with cars that have manual 1 and manual 2 on the shifter, type 3 if it just has Drive on the shifter. GRAY-CONNECTOR SOLENOID BLOCK gray-connector solenoid block came out in 2009 (figure 7 BELOW) and has one less solenoid than the white-connector solenoid. The confusion arises with the transmission range sensor plate. Between 2009 and around 2011, vehicles still employ the type-2 transmission range sensor plate for those equipped with manual 1 and manual 2 positions on the shifter. There isn't a specific cutoff date for transitioning to the type-3 transmission range sensor plate. The type-3 plate (figure 8 ABOVE) features a pocket depth of 0.158” (4.0mm) and a manual valve slot width of 0.500” (12.7mm). This type-3 plate is designed for vehicles without manual 1 or manual 2 shifter positions. When replacing the gray-connector solenoid block with a white-connector one, it's crucial to match it with the appropriate transmission range sensor plate: type 2 for cars with manual 1 and manual 2 shifter positions, and type 3 if the shifter only has a Drive position.Paying close attention to these details will prevent confusion when working on an RFE transmission.
