Lemnitzer, General, U.S. Army,” by General Lemnitzer who served as the fourth chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1960-1962). Afterwards he served as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO (1963-1969). Lemnitzer’s tenure as a four star general on active duty (14 years) is the second longest at that rank in the history of the US Army after General William T. Sherman.
