full CLA vintage 35mm SLR Yashica 300 auto focus camera circa approx. 1994

Description: Beautiful condition fully CLA'd Yashica 300 35mm film SLR camera circa 1993 - made in Japan. This 3rd generation auto focus system camera is considered to be one of the best late 90s/early 2000s era auto focus 35mm SLR cameras. Interface simplicity, features, ergonomics, long-term reliability, and build quality sets it above many of the equivalent Canon EOS series, the Minolta Maxxum series, as well as contemporary Nikon, Pentax and Sigma auto focus cameras of that same era! Look closely at some of those other cameras - and you'll also notice many of them are made in China or other low-labor-cost Asian countries - not Japan like this Yashica 300 is! Professional Cleaning Lubrication & Adjustment by Mike in August 2024 at: Advanced Camera Repair151 Springfield Avenue, suite 8HJoliet, IL 60435 web site: https://www.advancedcamerarepair.com All aspects of this camera and lenses work as they should, ready to produce another lifetime of fantastic photos. You will be getting a trouble-free system ready for immediate use as soon as you receive your package. requires one CR5 battery - included. NOTE: I have shot a few rolls of film (about 2 or 3 rolls of 24 exp) with no flash with this battery so not sure how much power it has left. Typical battery life: 25 rolls of 24-exposure film with 50% flash use in AF mode (at ordinary temperature; according to Yashica testing standard) and significantly longer if you do not use auto focus or flash as much as in the test standards. I get closer to around 30 rolls out of one CR5 battery on my own 300 AF when I do little flash photography and use manual focus a lot. The shooting mode flexibility of this camera makes it suitable, in my opinion, for use by advanced amateur photographers and even professionals, or simply as a "point-and-shoot" for all skill levels when you need a quick photo. ++++++++++ Recommendation: get a Skylight 1A filter for all your camera lenses. Benefits: a very pleasing subtle warming effect (due the to slight magenta tint) and 50% reduction of the negative effects of ultra violet (UV) light on your photographs: haze and a bluish cast that alter and ruin your images, particularly in landscape and outdoor photography. Filter also improves overall clarity, contrast, and color saturation in your photos.Film is far more sensitive to UV light than digital sensors are, so this is a simple and effective (and cheap) way to mitigate UV effects. ++++++++++ resolution of 35mm film images vs. digital images:depending on the ISO speed of the film you use, a typical 35mm photo is equivalent to a 20mp to 50mp digital image Low ISO film, such as 100 or 200 = sharper images with less grain, but requires more light to capture an image, equivalent to an approx. up to 50mp digital image. Low ISO film, such as 400 or 800, re = brighter images in low-light environments but typically less sharp photos with more grain, equivalent to an approx. 20+mp digital image. You can adjust the ISO sensitivity on your digital camera to compensate for available light, but your sensor's mp rating is what it is, and it will dictate the maximum resolution of your digital photos. The foremost advantage of film photography is the unique aesthetic it brings. Film has a distinctive texture and depth with rich, warm colors (and superb tonal detail for black & white photographs) and a wide overall tonal range, contributing to an organic look that digital photography struggles to replicate. good overview of film vs. digital at: https://www.elevatedmagazines.com/single-post/digital-vs-film-the-pros-and-cons-in-modern-photography ++++++++++ included: everything seen in photos, including two 28-70mm lenses, each lens has it own front and rear caps. o Yashica 300 camera body with body cap (use when storing camera with no lens mounted) o Yashica power zoom - powered zoom from 28 to 70mm, with option for manual zoom adjustment - f/3.5-4.5 - 52mm filter thread. o Sigma - manual zoom adjustment 28-70mm lens with focus scale - f/3.3-4.5 - 52mm filter thread. o CR-5 battery o eyepiece pad o OEM neckstrap ++++++++++ Advanced Camera did a professional examination of both lenses - assessed as being in good condition with no CLA / maintenance needed. Yashica lens has 2 slight translucent spots on front lens which however have no effect on photos. (Difficult to clearly capture in photos)Film tested: all photos came out in sharp focus with no artifacts. I did not see any noticeable barrel distortion on either lens at their widest 28mm setting. Both lenses work well for snapshots, as an action lens, portrait lens, landscape lens, or street photography lens. They allow you to make high resolution photos (to include slide film) with ease. As zoom lenses do, both can flare a little when facing very bright sunlight / other bright light. Use lens hood to eliminate / reduce flare - both come with excellent deep lens hoods. ++++++++++ Recommendation: get a Skylight 1A filter for all your camera lenses. Benefits: a very pleasing subtle warming effect (due the to slight magenta tint) and 50% reduction of the negative effects of ultra violet (UV) light on your photographs: haze and a bluish cast in your images, particularly in landscape and outdoor photography. Filter also improves overall clarity, contrast, and color saturation in your photos.Film is far more sensitive to UV light than digital sensors are, so this is a simple and effective (and cheap) way to mitigate UV effects. ++++++++++ My favorite aspects of this camera which make it so enjoyable to use: o bright and uncluttered viewfinder - always more pleasant to use than some of the noticeably dimmer ones I have experienced - even in far more "up-market" AF film SLRs. o This camera has no multiple-layer menus requiring push-button or slider switch input to access camera functions. o The often too-complicated interfaces I have found on other 35mm Auto Focus SLRs from the 1980s to 2000s cause me to spend far too much time fiddling with controls and/or referring to the manual to learn how to click through several layers of menus. As a result, I have less time to actually compose and take photographs! Many of those cameras seem to really be designed to be primarily a large SLR point and shoot camera! o Two large knurled horizontal dials with positive click-stops on the camera's top plate give you direct control of: aperture, shutter speed, and exposure compensation in all modes. o Dedicated mode button whose only function is to click between the four shooting Modes: Program / Aperture Priority / Shutter Priority / Manual - no menus! o Dedicated drive mode button whose only function is to click between the drive modes: single shot, continuous (@ 2 fps), 10-sec. timer, and trap focus - no menus! o No picture scenario modes (ie: portrait, sports, nighttime, etc, etc.). This camera simply allows the photographer to select the right f-stop, shutter speed, EV compensation, etc. -or -in Program mode- the camera makes those decisions, which it does a darned good job of! o In Manual mode one dial controls the aperture, the other dial controls the shutter speed, and you can adjust these while looking through the viewfinder until the exposure settings indicate the correct EV. Almost like a modern micro-processor controlled version of the old in-viewfinder "match-needle" exposure meter, like I have on my Pentax Spotmatic F. o The LCD panel shows f-stop, shutter speed, etc... values you have selected. This allows intuitive and quick settings versus the more tedious and slower push button/slide switch setup I have found on many other maker (Nikon / Canon / Minolta) Auto Focus film SLRs from the 1980s through the 2000s- all of which discourage me from wanting to shoot those cameras in anything other than Program mode - or even wanting to own them at all. o Camera remembers the settings you selected in the last shooting mode you were in and goes back to that shooting mode and settings choice when you turn it back on. +++++ This super user-friendly interface combination of dials and LCD screen is one I have not found in any of the other Auto Focus 35mm SLRs I have owned and/or had experience with: Canon EOS: 630, 10s, 3 & 1vMinolta MAXXUM: 5, a Sweet II, HTsi, 7 & 9Nikon: N100, N75, N80, F6 Pentax: Z1pSigma: Sa7n - this comes close to the Yashica 300 and has the simple interface of a 1960s/1970s mechanical SLR (a good thing)! It may be my remembrance of a simpler photography experience in the 1960s & 70s using our family's cameras of that era,(Zeiss Contaflex II SLR, FOCA rangefinder, Kodak Retina) but I believe that a camera with modern functions which also allows simple direct access to those functions is better and by far more enjoyable. +++++ The shortcomings:o no Depth of Field preview o no manual over-ride of film canister DX auto detection to set film ISO - only an issue if you use non-DX coded film canisters Camera auto-sets non DX-coded film to 100 ISO - but you can compensate by using the EV + or - adjustment feature. o no remote shutter release capability, for ex. to reduce camera shake/blurry photo risk when using slower shutter seeds on a tripod. But - can use timer function to accomplish this, so there is a work-around o I wish it had more info in the viewfinder, but all needed info is in the LCD panel for each mode, so not a major issue.- however - the plus of minimal info in the viewfinder is that it leaves you an uncluttered picture for composing your shots. ++++++++++ Cosmetic and mechanical condition - camera: o no damage, paint loss, or other defects o battery compartment is clean and free of corrosion o the mirror box, mirror surfaces, viewfinder, and film compartment are all clean - no blue or brown/pinkish discoloration sometimes seen in older cameras o all switches, knobs, dials, and other controls operate smoothly and positively - no looseness, grittiness o all functions are working 100% properly +++++ Cosmetic and mechanical condition - lens:o aperture blades are snappy, free-moving and free of oil or damage o lens glass elements are free of balsam separation, haze, fungus, and scratches o lens mount is pristine and the filter threads are unmarred. o auto and manual focus mechanisms work as they should, and the zoom function is positive and smooth ++++++++++ Capabilities overview: Shooting modes, can choose auto focus or manual focus in all below modes: o Program (P) - camera selects aperture (f-stop) and shutter speedo Aperture Priority (AV) - operator selects aperture, camera selects shutter speed o Shutter Priority (TV) - operator selects shutter speed, camera selects aperture o Manual (M) - operator selects aperture and shutter speed with metering feedback visible in viewfinder Four drive modes available in all four shooting modes:o single frame o continuous - at 2 frames per second o 10 second delay self-timer, you can stop after it has started - operation indicated by flashing LED and audible 'beeps'. o Trap Focus, a Yashica proprietary technology feature: - Set the focus on a specific point via auto focus or manual focus - your choice - camera AF system then senses motion at that focus point - camera automatically shoots when a moving subject enters the focus area - ideal for wildlife photography, capturing other moving objects such as auto/boat/horse races, etc... - Can Use this mode in a "set-and-forget" configuration - ie: set up on a tripod and leave camera to 'do its thing' automatically!! ++++++++++ Specifications:o Auto Focus 35mm film system (24 x 36 mm format) o hybrid construction: high impact resistant polycarbonate exterior panels over an aluminum-alloy frame, (some cameras of this era and later had a far less desirable and more fragile all-plastic frame and exterior panel construction.) o auto focus lock o Yashica AF Mount o vertical travel metal focal plane shutter o Penta-mirror eye-level finder o matte focusing screen o viewfinder: 90% field of view, 0.75X magnification (with 50 mm lens set at infinity) o In viewfinder: -Focusing area frame -panorama frame marks -flash icon ("flash charged" signal, low-light warning), -sharp-focus signal - green LED dot indicating ready to shoot -program mode icon (P) when set to this mode -exposure meter indicator in Manual mode (+) & (-) LEDs -exposure (+) & (-) LEDs appear in other modes to indicate exposure compensation if needed o automatic backlight compensation adjusts EV when needed in P, Av, Tv modes o shutter speeds: from 8 sec. to 1/2000 of a sec. + B (bulb) in manual mode - shown as "blb" on LCD screen o Through The Lens (TTL) center-weighted average light metering system o metering range: 1 to 20 EV at (@ ASA 100, f/1.8) o Auto-Focus sensing range: EV 2 - EV 19 (@ ISO 100) o EV compensation +/- 2 EV in 1/2 step increments - available in all shooting modes, manually inputted in Manual mode o camera automatically shifts to higher or lower shutter speed program parameters according to the focal length of lens in use When conditions dictate, you can also manually shift between higher and lower shutter speed EV values. (ex: shift between f/4 @ 1/125sec. -or- f5.6 @ 1/60sec o reads DX coded film with speeds of 25 to 5000 ISO, non-DX film automatically set to 100 ISO. o built-in electronic flash - see detailed specifications below o hot shoe with three contact points for additional external flash o auto focus: TTL phase difference detection with CCD sensor module o Supports use of Yashica AF mount Power Lenses, also supports use of power zoom lenses via lens' built-in motor. AUTO-FOCUS SYSTEM: TTL phase difference detection with 97-photosite CCD sensor module located in lower part of mirror box; -shooting distance range selectable; focusing is effected by depressing the shutter release halfway; -manual focusing possible; green LED turns on when the subject is in sharp focus; -provided with AF supplementary light and moving-object prediction function. -Auto focus zone selector can specify limit focusing range when selected. FILM LOADING: Auto loading; film advances automatically to frame No. 1. FILM ADVANCE: Automatic with built-in motor; continuous film advance at 2 frames/sec. FILM REWINDING: automatically rewinds at the end of film; automatic stop when rewinding is completed; can select mid-roll rewinding. LCD Display panel:o drive modeo exposure modeo shutter speedo aperture in 1/2 step valueso shooting distance range, manually selectable option speeds up autofocus reaction timeo low battery warningo exposure countero flash mode indicatoro ISO (film speed) indicatoro exposure compensationo exposure indication in manual modeo lens' focal length setting (with AF Power Zoom Lens only) Built-in pop-up flash specifications:o guide number: 40 o aperture control with distance information; guide number: approx. 12 (ISO 100-m) o illumination angle: covers the field of view of up to a 35 mm lens o recycle time: approximately 3 sec. w/ new battery o selectable red-eye reducing pre-flash capability o flash mark "↯" turns on in the viewfinder when the flash is fully charged o flash mark "↯" blinks (6 Hz) when the subject is NOT within flash effective range. o flash-synch speed: 1/100 sec o dedicated 3-contact point hotshoe for an external flash unit, but not in combination with the built-in flash A great package for a low price - intuitive controls, fun and rewarding to use.
