Description: Stunning Jodhpur polychrome enamel lidded box by Fritz Heckert, one of the first examples of European glass being made for the Islamic market, c. 1883. Features elaborate hand-enameled and gilt decorated florals, piece is unsigned. Measures 5 ¾” high x 7 ¾” diameter 1/2 and is in Mint to near mint condition free of nicks, fleabites with minor scratching to the base as shown. Fritz Heckert specialized in glass like this which is imitating Indian damascened metalwork known as 'Bidri' ware, from the area in which it is made around Calcutta. These Indian wares had been shown at international exhibitions since 1851 and were much admired and copied in glass, first by J & L Lobmeyr, Vienna, in 1873.
