Description: PLEASE READ SHIPPING DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE BUYING! To learn more about us please click on our profile This relatively small male portrait, signed "F. / Amerling" is listed in the catalogue raisonné of Friedrich von Amerling (under n° 189, executed in 1830 - see our image - with the title "Herr Bilhuber, im Freien sitzend" ("Mr. Bilhuber, sitting in landscape"). Our web search led us, as we initially believed, to the identity of this gentleman. If we are right, his full name was Friedrich Bilhuber. He died in Vienna in 1861 being 72, which means that he is 40-41 years old on the portrait. We also learned that he was a wealthy man, financier, owner of a house in Vienna (Schottengasse 103 and the famous villa on Kahlenberg- a mountain towering over Vienna (according to contemporaries this villa was the "most beautiful point of the (Austrian) monarchy"). Moreover, from a young age he was one of the most prominent art collectors in Vienna and several years prior to his death, we meet him as "Geschäftsleiter" ("financial manager") of Viennese "Kunstverein" (Union of artists). Clearly, he was not just a simple client of portraitist Amerling, but both were well acquainted. Nevertheless, we could not shed the thought that the depicted man in our portrait looks younger than 40/41. Oops! In the digital collection of the Vienna City Museum, we were able to find two drawn portraits of Friedrich Bilhuber made from nature around 1820. They do not absolutely convince us that they and our portrait show the same person. It cannot be excluded that we could be dealing instead with a portrait of Friedrich Bilhuber's younger brother Hermann Bilhuber, doctor of medicine and chemistry, owner of a pharmacy, who also lived on the Kahlenberg and who was constantly met by the contemporaries in the company of Friedrich. Friedrich von Amerling (1803 Vienna - 1887 ibid.) was an outstanding Austrian portrait painter of the 19th century. In 1816-1823 he studied at the Vienna Academy. In mid 1820s he travelled to London intending to get acquainted with Thomas Lawrence, who was considered the greatest portrait painter of the time. Lawrence allowed the young artist to visit his studio and to continue his education after the master's accomplished works. 11 months later F.von Amerling moved to Paris, where he was friendly received by Horace Vernet. After his return to Vienna he soon became one of the most popular portraitists of the Austrian high society. He worked in Italy in 1831 and 1841-44. Around 1000 portraits created by the artist are known to exist; many of them are now missing. Works of F.von Amerling are displayed in the greatest museums worldwide. Our images show some other works of this artist offered on the art market in recent years.
