Description: French Shriner & Urner Vintage Metal Shoehorn Men's Extra Quality Shoes A metal, silver colored, super vintage shoe horn featuring a defunct men's shoe line. Measures just over 3.5 inches long Joseph P. French founded his shoe company in the early 1860's to manufacture the very finest footwear for the gentlemen of the 19th century. French was joined in 1881 by Charles J. Shriner, who was also accomplished in shoe manufacturing. Together they developed the quality that was to become synonymous with the French Shriner Brand name. One way to tell the age of a French Shriner shoe is whether the full name is French Shriner & Urner or just French Shriner. The "Urner" was dropped I believe sometime in the 1950s after Samual Urner died. This company started manufacturing in the late 1800s in Rockland, MA. Around 1900s. they built a factory on 63 Melcher Street . They eventually moved their operations to 443 Albany Street in Boston where they continued manufacturing until the late 1960s. The City of Boston then took the land which was used for parking for the workers by eminent domain and subsequently drove them out of business. So much for Boston's "redevelopment" plan. French, Shriner & Urner was a Boston company, formed when Charles J. Shriner—who had been a traveling salesman for Hanan & Son—and Samuel Urner bought out half of the older firm of French & Hall. Shriner and Urner expanded aggressively. Like Hanan, they built their own Boston factory and maintained exclusive retail outposts. New York City was home to no fewer than six of the company’s stores.7
