Description: Frederick Halpern (born Vienna 1909) “Two Musicians” (The etching is also known as “Omdurman” Original Signed Limited Edition (10/25) Etching with Aquatint Signed in pencil right lower margin and designated in pencil, as being the 10th pull of 25 impressions on the left. This print run is normal for Halpern. Very few of his etchings exceeded that number for total impressions made. Plate: 25.5cm x 19.5cm. Sheet: 35cm x 25cm. Printed with a grey/black ink on a pale cream wove paper. The print is loose, not mounted not framed. Two musicians, one with a drum and the other a flute play against a wall and doorway. Not dated but likely 1920’s or 30’s. The range of locations for Halperns’ etchings is exceptionally wide, a direct result of his extensive travels in Europe, Africa, SEAsia, the Far East ands Australasia. These musicians are likely to be Sudanese, hence the alternative title :Omdurman . Omdurman is the most populated city in Sudan in the State of Khartoum. Frederick Halpern was a notable twentieth century artist and writer, who studied painting and printmaking techniques in both Vienna and Paris. During the Italian-Abyssinian war Frederick Halpern was arrested by the Italian army for helping refugees escape to the Sudan. This is possibly when he etched this plate? He attempted to join the British army at the outbreak of World War Two but was refused because of his nationality.Frederick Halpern came to Australia in the early 1950's. He also extensively visited New Zealand, Java, Bali and other sites. He wrote and illustrated a number of fine books upon these lands in both English and German. As an original etcher Frederick Halpern was gifted in both colour and black and white techniques. Condition. No foxing, tears, damage or creasing plate or margins. My photos are in natural daylight.
