Description: Franklin D. Roosevelt Library Art - 1847 - War With Mexico - The Landing Force Departs on an Exposition at Loreto, 5 October 1847 This is a print measuring 16"x20". The original is a water color by William H. Meyers, U.S. Navy. "So Effective Has Been the Performance of the Duty of the Navy in Every Quarter of the Globe, that our Increasing Commerce in the Most Distant Seas Has Felt no Check and Met no Interruption" - Secretary of the Navy John Y. Mason The text at the bottom reads: The naval conquest of California was consummated more than a year before the war with Mexico could be concluded in the east. While fighting in eastern Mexico continued, the Navy on the west coast was consolidating its position in California. In part this was done by tightening the blockage and by attacking the principal seaports along the west coast. DALE was ordered to "run along the coast of Mexico to look out for privateers and merchant vessels of the enemy." Her operations were of indirect help to General Winfield Scott in the east. The ship's Gunner, William H. Meyers, drew several water color sketches of DALE during this voyage. In this example of his work, DALE is seen at anchor in Loreto, Lower California. Three armed cutters under command of Lieutenant Craven with marines and a company of seamen depart the ship for an attack on Loreto. Very good condition. The only flaw is that the corners are slightly bent right at the tips (see last photo), but this is going to be "framed out". Smoke-free, pet-free home.Shipping is USPS and is free.
