Caleb Carr was born in 1955 in Manhattan and grew up on the Lower East Side, where he still lives. He spent two years at Kenyon College, 1973-75 and graduated from New York University in 1977, earning a degree in history. Carr was best friends with the "Beat" writers: Lucian Carr, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Jack Kerouac. "The Alienist" is a reminiscence told by JOHN MOORE, a reporter for the New York Times, on the day of THEODORE ROOSEVELT'S funeral. Twenty-three years earlier, Roosevelt, who was then Commissioner of New York Police, had summoned Moore and R. Lazlo Kreizler, a brilliant pioneer in the new and often-scoffed-at discipline of psychology, to help solve a case of brutal murders. Kreizler is "the Alienist," a 19th century term for one who studies the minds of the deranged---the minds of those who are alienated from normal society. Kreizler, Moore, and Roosevelt had been friends at HARVARD. Carr describes the city of New York of the 1890s, from the wretched tenements and shanties on the Lower East side to the opulent meals in the famed Delmonico's restaurant. . .from the wailing cries of inmates at Bellevue to the strains of RIGOLETTO at the Metropolitan Opera. Historical figures appear side by side with fictional ones: J.P. Morgan, Lincoln Steffans, Sara Howard and Roosevelt. 496 pages. I offer combined shipping. 659 pages. I offer combined shipping.
