Franklin Library: PLATO: THE REPUBLIC: GREEK PHILOSOPHY

Description: Franklin Library leather edition of Plato's "The Republic," Translated by A.D. Lindsay, Frontispiece Painting of Raphael's famous fresco 'The School of Athens,' one of the 100 GREATEST BOOKS OF ALL TIME series, published in 1975. Bound in hunter green leather, the book has French moire silk end leaves, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition---except for imperfection to gilt on fore edge. Plato, who lived from 428 – 348 BC, was a philosopher in Classical Greece and the founder of the ACADEMY in ATHENS. Although Athenians delighted in athletic achievements, they also loved reason. They loved to use their minds. They burned to know. They were serious about poetry and the arts. Book One opens with these lines: "I went down to the Peiraeus yesterday with Glaucon, the son of Ariston. As this was the first celebration of the festival, I wished to make my prayers to the goddess and see the ceremony. I like the procession of the residents. . ." Plato lived when Athens was a bustling, cosmopolitan trading center and its port was crowded with ships. Plato is widely considered the most pivotal figure in the development of philosophy. Unlike nearly all of his contemporaries, Plato's entire work has survived intact for over 2,400 years. Along with his teacher, SOCRATES, and his most famous student, ARISTOTLE, Plato laid the very foundations of Western philosophy and science. Plato's philosophical views had many societal implications, especially on the idea of an ideal state or government. Plato, through the words of Socrates, asserts that societies have a tripartite class structure corresponding to the appetite/spirit/reason structure of the individual soul.
