Description: Franklin Library leather spine edition of Charles Dickens's " Uncommercial Traveller and Reprinted Pieces Etc.," a COLLECTOR'S edition, introduced by Leslie Staples, Illustrated with Eleven illustrations by G.J. Pinwell, F. Walker, and W.M., one of the OXFORD LIBRARY OF CHARLES DICKENS series, published in 1985. Bound in 1/4 scarlet red leather spine, the book has marbled paper end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in Near FINE condition. Charles Dickens, who lived from 1812-1870, was born near PORTSMOUTH, England but his family moved to LONDON when he was two years old. The novel opens with these lines: "No landlord is my friend and brother; no chambermaid loves me, no waiter worships me, no boots admires and envies me. No round of beef or tongue or ham is especially cooked for me. When I go on journeys, I am not usually rated at a low figure in the bill. . .as a town traveller, I am never to be seen driving a vehicle. Literally speaking, I am always wandering here and there from my rooms in Covent-Garden, London---now about the city streets; now about the country by-roads---seeing many little things, and some great things, which because they interest me, I think may interest others." In "Recollections of Mortality" there is a humorous account of the purchase of his first horse. In "City of London Churches" we get a delightful glimpse of his first love affair. In "Dull-borough Town" we have a picture of the background of his own childhood. Other selections include: "The Lamplighter," "To Be Read at Dusk," "Sunday under Three Heads," "Holiday Romance," "Captain Boldheart," "Mock Provisions and Exemptions," "Whisperings of Greatness," "In an Express Train," "Affecting Incidents," "A Birthday Party," "The ship's Stores," "In the Burlington Arcade," "Out for the Day," "The Cattle and the Sheep Markets," "A Monument of French Folly," "The Warriors and their Brides, and "George Silverman's Explanation" and others. Leslie Staples wrote in the Introduction: "To know Dickens one must be familiar with a dozen major novels, but the knowledge is incomplete without some familiarity with his journalistic work, much of the best of which is to be found in this volume." 796 pages---a RARE title.
