Bound in burgundy leather, the books have ivory moire silk end leaves, satin book markers, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, hubbed spine, and gold gilding on three edges---both volumes and the silpcase are in near FINE condition. John James Audubon, who lived from 1785--1851, was an American ornithologist, naturalist and painter. He was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, entitled "The Birds of America," is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. Audubon identified 25 new species. In the early 1840's he began working on "Quadrupeds," and with the help of his son John Woodhouse Audubon, they would produce 150 folio drawings, which were hand-printed and hand-colored by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia. The paper used for these two volumes is an 80 lb. text which matches identically the color, texture, and opacity of the paper used in the Octavo editions printed more than 120 years ago. 319 pages in Quadrupeds and 287 pages in Selected Birds.
