THE approach to this ancient capital of Champagne would be fine at any rate, but coming in as a relief to the monotony of the route, one unconsciously exaggerates its beauty. Seated in the midst of a plain, however, covered with 'rich plantations, through which the Seine, cut into numerous branches, rushes with energy, and surrounded by ditches and ramparts, above which appear the dark roofs and spires of the city, Troyes certainly breaks upon the traveller's view in a very imposing attitude. It is all imposition. We no sooner enter the gates than we find ourselves in a mean and miserable town, without even that character of the picturesque which always belongs to antiquity. Joseph Mallord William Turner visited the Loire just once in his life, but the Seine he travelled often. Between 1821 and 1832, he regularly travelled this waterway, making several steamboat trips from Le Havre to Rouen and visiting the surrounding area. He interested himself not only in the natural landscape but also in the manifestations of modern technology such as steam and factory chimneys- judged to be decidedly unaesthetic at the time. On these journeys, Turner jotted down his ideas in small sketchbooks, mostly using a pencil, though sometimes pen and ink. From 1826 onwards, he also used sheets of blue paper he cut to size himself, the pages forming a linear record of the various landmarks along the way. His sketches were mainly devoid of figures, except for a few costume studies. It was only later, back in his studio, that Turner painted his watercolours, each based on several sketches. Whereas the latter feature low, open views, as if taken from water level by someone in a boat, the paintings are more varied in composition, with a greater sense of breadth and depth. The attention Turner paid to effects such as storms, rainbows and sunrises ensured that each place he depicted had its own very special atmosphere. It was in the early xixth century that English publishers began to produce Landscape Annuals, luxury travel books aimed at the middle classes. Turner himself submitted a series of drawings of French rivers to the publisher Charles Heath, and the 1834 and 1825 volumes of the resulting Turner's Annuals each contained twenty views of the Seine. The plates were later purchased by another publisher and included in Rivers of France. It was doubtless through this work that artists such as Delacroix, Monet and Pissarro became acquainted with Turner's art. Please note: the terms used in our auctions for engraving, heliogravure, lithograph, print, plate, photogravure etc. are ALL prints on paper, NOT blocks of steel or wood. ENGRAVINGS, the term commonly used for these paper prints, were the most common method in the 1700s and 1800s for illustrating old books, and these paper prints or "engravings" were inserted into the book with a tissue guard frontis, usually on much thicker quality rag stock paper, although many were also printed and issued as loose stand alone prints.
