Description: FRANCE - BANQUE DE FRANCE - Versement d'Or pour la Défense Nationale - National Defence Gold Receipt, issued by the Bank of France, 1916 (ink on paper), during World War One. Lightly handled condition. FRENCH NOTE FROM WORLD WAR ONE PERIOD. Banque De France war gold receipt, dated 28 Juillet 1916. Size :- 255 x 142mm Printed in Black with a Light Yellow background on heavy ivory-coloured stock paper, on one side only. There is a complex border design featuring Caducei and Cornucopia with other Classical motifs. BANQUE DE FRANCE is printed large at the centre of the bottom border. VERSEMENT D'OR POUR LA DÉFENSE NATIONALE is at the top, this translates as Payment for Gold for the National Defence. There is no Serial Number. The bond/receipt was issued. on 28th July 1916, interestingly the name of the recipient was not written in (see below). These type of bonds/receipts were partially printed with space left for filling in details in ink by hand, in this case the full text reads:- Versement D'Or pour la Défense Nationale. La Banque de France constate que M....................................................a versé ce jour en Or la Somme de Dix Francs en échange de billets de banque. Le 28 Juillet 1916. This translates roughly as - ‘Gold Deposit to pay for national defence. The Bank of France notes that ..............................................has paid this day in Gold the sum of Ten Gold Francs in exchange for bank notes 28th July 1916.' Signed by Visa (a Clerk who checked the information on the receipt was correct) and Le Secrétaire Général, at the time M. Ernest Picard - Issued by Banque de France, Paris. Unusually the name of the person has not been filled in on the bond/receipt, one explanation for this could have been that it was one of a number of receipts issued to the same person on the same day for various sums of Gold exchanged for banknotes. The note has been lightly handled, there are a few bends to the paper but it is crisp clean and bright still and overall grades Extremely Fine.
