Madame de La Fayette (1634-1693) Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne, better known as Madame de La Fayette, was one of the greatest female authors of the 17th century. Coming from the petty nobility, the girl was introduced as a teenager into fashionable literary salons thanks to the friendship of Madame de Sévigné. She distinguished herself by her curiosity, her culture and her intelligence. There she frequented the fine spirits of her time, including the future Duchess of Orléans, Henriette of England, whose biography she wrote, the moralist La Rochefoucauld, who became an intimate friend, or the mondain grammaiian Gilles Ménage, with whom she took her first steps in Latin, Spanish and Italian. In 1655, she married the Count of La Fayette, of whom she had two sons. This rural gentleman living mostly retired to his land, the young woman can indulge her passion for writing without constraint. Breaking with the precious genre of the time, she published, without signing them, two books: The Princess of Montpensier (1662) and 'Aid (1669).Madame de La Fayette paved the way for the psychological and analytical novel. His masterpiece The Princess of Cleves (1678) describes the mores of the court and study the path of passion and its torment. This book subtly explores the confusion of feelings: joy, suffering, jealousy, doubt ... In the mode of introspection, the struggle of the characters between the heart and the reason is described with finesse in a clean style, with a concern for efficiency in the plot. Madame de La Fayette had, but she surrounds her publications with a great deal of anonymity, her notoriety has passed through time. The Princess of Cleves is today unanimously considered a founding work of French literature, making Madame de La Fayette the initiator of the modern novel.
