FORT PREBLE MAINE US ARTILLERY UNIFORMS ISSUED 1853

Description: Historic Fort Preble, Maine on the Portland waterfront was built as a defense after the War of 1812 and remained active until the End of the Civil War. IT is now the location of the Portland Historic Museum and a popular tourism site. An Original July, 1853 Receipt for various uniforms and accoutrements issued by Captain Charles Lawrence Kilburn, 3rd US Artillery . The 8 x 12" Receipt lists a large number of items, and is filled in ink on blue paper with a 2 x 8" heading attached on white paper. The Receipt is unsigned, and one of the Fort Preble items I have seen. Minor age stains, top corner tear, Overall VG.Comes w service info- Brevet Brigadier General Charles Lawrence Kilburn a native of Lawrenceville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania was an 1841 Graduate of West Point, served in the 3rd US Artillery , won commendations for action at the Battle of Buena Vista, Mexico (where his gunnery saved the Mississippi Rifles from defeat).
