Description: THIS AUCTION IS FOR ME TO REBUILD YOUR STEERING BOX ONLY. NO ONE WILL TAKE THE TIME TO “MIC” THESE BOXES AND SET THE TOLERANCES LIKE I DO LET ALONE HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO ACTUALLY REBUILD ONE. Ford F-1 steering box rebuild. Whether or not your box is in a show car, old hot rod, or a rat rod I can rebuild and or restore it. There aren’t many people that do it and it costs a fortune because the hard to find parts that cost a lot that you have to hunt down don’t fit! I have it down to a science. To touch the surface of the rebuild the warm gear must be pressed off the steering column with anywhere between 6,000lbs to 17,000lbs and is replaced with a new one. The gear on the sector shaft must be removed by machining off the mushroom pressed ends of the wrist pin that support the sector shaft gear, this is done on a mill. The new gear must be machined to the correct size because it is approximately .008 too large. Doesn’t sound like much but have you ever tried to suck a marble through a coffee straw? The two brass bushings that support the sector shaft are usually good but in many cases need replacing and must be pressed out with approximately 3,000lbs to 6,000lbs and new ones must be pressed back in and then reamed to the correct size otherwise the shaft will not fit back in the box. I have made a special tool to press in and out the bushings that arnt much thicker than a finger nail, it’s quite a feat. I have also made a tool that aids in pressing off the worm gear from the bottom of the steering column shaft so it doesn’t mushroom or get buggered up. All the bearings, races, gaskets and seal get replaced and the box gets shimmed so the bearings don’t have too much or not enough of a preload on them. Once the box is all assembled it gets adjusted so the steering doesn’t bind but at the same time there isn’t play. I pack the boxes with grease instead of gear oil. I have found grease works much better and doesn’t seep out of the seal. Over the years the sector shaft wears and or rusts around the seal which makes it hard to get a perfect seal. I can do a restoration/blast and paint on your box for a additional cost, that example is shown with the last photos of a black box done for a customer that had a show truck for its application. Thanks for looking and God bless.
