Description: FOLLOWING THE EQUATOR: A Journey Around The World. By MARK TWAIN, The American Publishing Co., Hartford, Connecticut, 1897 (First Edition). Travel Following the Equator is a non-fiction social commentary in the form of a travelogue published by Mark Twain in 1897. Twain was practically bankrupt in 1894 due to investing heavily into the failed Paige Compositor. This is Twain's account of that circumnavigation of the globe and his experiences in Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, India, and South Africa. As he arrives at each destination, he discusses the history, people, modes of travel, laws, and customs. THE SPINE CLOTH IS MISSING AND THE FRONT COVER IS DETACHED AND PRESENT. Moderately rubbed cover with secure (slightly cracked) text block and nice clean pages. The first free endpaper is detached (and present) and it has a large fancy cursive name with 1899 date to someone in Chicago dated 1919 (in pencil). Fair condition missing spine cloth and front cover is detached (rear cover is loose showing bindery webbing). Hardcover book about 9-1/4 x 6 with 712 pages. Illustrated.
