Pearce (Mrs. Bates) and Bob Bates.Biography:Bob Bates was born in 1913 and died May 23, 1991 of heart disease complicated by cancer. His widow, Elva Bates but better known as K.C. Bates, passed on a few years later.They were art students during the depression in the 1930s in America and in some ways their art reflects that; it is non-demanding, honest and un-glamourized. They were though in some ways privileged for they flew their own private plane and always flew above the main roads and rivers.They were both gifted people. Bob Bates originally carved decoys for Abercrombie and Fitch and both were involved in advertising, newspaper, magazine and related art fields. It helped put food on the table, finance their lifestyle and provided a base to devote themselves full time to graphics, specifically wood cuts and etchings.Their work would possibly have been better known had it not been for their philosophy 'long biographies sometimes tempt the hanging of the artist rather than his work', a fate they chose to forgo. Even so their work is displayed in many private collections worldwide and in a diverse selection of public institutions in America from the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art to the Microsoft Art Collection.
