Description: 3x5 Foot Flag of New Caledonia Up to 2010, the only official flag of New Caledonia, an overseas territory of France, was the French tricolor. However, with the official adoption of the Kanak flag alongside the French tricolor in July 2010, New Caledonia has become one of the few countries or territories in world with two official national flags. In 2008 the government of New Caledonia debated the introduction of a regional official flag. A flag in fairly widespread unofficial use was the flag of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS), a political party favoring independence for New Caledonia, but the French tricolor would remain the only official flag for the next two years. On 17 July 2010, French Prime minister François Fillon took part in a ceremony in Nouméa where the FLNKS flag was hoisted alongside the French tricolor, giving both flags official status. Shortly before the visit the New Caledonia Congress voted to adopt the Kanak flag alongside the French tricolor. The FLNKS flag, first adopted by the party in 1980, is composed of three horizontal stripes of blue, red and green with a yellow disc with a vertical black flèche faitière symbol. The flèche faitière is a kind of arrow which adorns the roofs of Kanak houses thrust through tutut shells. The blue symbolizes both the sky and more importantly the ocean surrounding New Caledonia. The red symbolizes the blood shed by the Kanaks in their struggle for independence, socialism, and unity. The green symbolizes the land itself and by extension the ancestors buried within it. The yellow disc is a representation of the sun. New Caledonia is a special collectivity of France located in the southwest Pacific Ocean 750 mi east of Australia. The island group includes the main island of Grande Terre, the Loyalty Islands, the Belep archipelago, the Isle of Pines and a few remote islets. The Chesterfield Islands in the Coral Sea are also part of New Caledonia. Locals refer to Grande Terre as "Le Caillou", the stone. The population is 252,000. The capital of the territory is Nouméa.
