Published by Book Creations Inc. (BCI) beginning in 1979, the series follows a white child raised by Native Americans in the late 17th century colonies. Gerson wrote the first 12 books in the series, establishing the sweeping, action-packed style for which BCI was known. While sometimes sacrificing strict historical accuracy for melodramatic storytelling, Gerson's portrayal of the wilderness and colonial struggles was engaging. His lead character Renno embodied the iconic noble savage archetype. Though clichéd, Renno's adventures appealed to mass market tastes. After Gerson's departure, other BCI authors continued the series to over 25 installments. But Gerson defined the template of blending history, folklore, romance, and wilderness adventure that made White Indian successful. Writing under multiple pseudonyms, Gerson authored many fictional series for BCI. His bold, rawboned narrative voice along with his knack for cliffhangers and steamy love scenes drove most BCI books. With White Indian and other series, Gerson played a key role in establishing BCI as a prolific producer of popular historical fiction in the 1970s-90s.
