Description: Finland: Scarce silver and enamel medal of the Uusi Suomi (New Finland) newspaper, engraved on reverse, “J. Malinen 12-V-1922.” The Uusi Suomi was a right-of-center nationalist newspaper founded in 1919 in the aftermath of the bitter Finnish Civil War. Two Uusi Suomi reporters were once invited to Italy in the late 1930s as a guest of the Fascist government, and were asked by the government to publish articles in favor of Fascist rule. During the Cold War, Uusi Suomi was accused by the Soviet Union of being the instrument of US propaganda, and the Soviet Embassy in Helsinki frequently protested to the editors of the paper. The medal design is the same as the newspaper’s logo. Little is known about the medal, but it was most likely awarded for meritorious/patriotic service to the newspaper or to the country. The medal is in extremely fine condition; measures ca. 30 x 20 mm; has multiple hallmarks for silver; and is on what is believed to be the original ribbon. Authenticity guaranteed; 14-day return privilege (30 days overseas), excluding postage, provided item is returned in same condition when sold. Item will be shipped USPS First Class Mail; will combine postage for multiple purchases.
