Presenting an Important and Extremely Rare Antique circa 1814 Engraved Masonic Ritual Apron made by the famous American Painter and Engraver Oliver Tarbell Eddy 1799-1868. Artwork by Oliver can be found in many prestigious Museum Collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Oliver is one of the finest artists to have created Masonic Aprons. The son of Master engraver Isaac Eddy, Oliver learned painting by himself. A version of our Apron is featured in the classic book on Masonic Aprons, Bespangled Painted & Embroidered, where it was credited to both Oliver T. Eddy and Lewis Robertson and dated 1814-1822. We believe our Apron is older and may have been an early example because the one in the book has attached borders and is co-credited to Robertson, who although a former student of Oliver’s father (an esteemed engraver), Robertson was primarily a distributor and publisher. The only signature engraved on our Apron is O. Eddy. The quality of engraving is exquisite. It features a gallery of spectacular symbols of Freemasonry. Altar, Square and Compass, Holy Bible, Unique All Seeing Eye, Columns, Noah’s Ark, Swords, Heart, Scales of Justice, Anchor of Hope, Two Hands, Beehive, Glowing Sun, Coffin of Mortality, Winged Hourglass, Tools and more. The Apron has been preserved under glass in a frame, but we are not including the frame in this sale. Only the apron. We don’t know if it is cloth or silk, but it is in very good vintage condition, with common folds. Measures approximately 12 ½ x 13 ½ inches.
