Description: Gorgeous three-quarters leather fine binding signed by Whitman Bennett, NY in excellent condition of this first edition of Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.'s classic, "The Autocrat Of The Breakfast Table." Bennett (1884-1968) established his studio (the "Bennet Book Studio") in the late 1920s, and so-called "Bennett bindings" are still popular today. This is a particularly bright and vivid example, featuring crimson morocco leather and wonderfully marbled paper. Spine with rich gilt work and raised bands, in excellent condition. Top edge gilt. Interior features marbled endpapers- very vivid, almost psychedelic, it must be said. Really crisp, bright binding with the only flaws to note being a couple of very small spots of wear/ rubbing, mostly on back cover, and slight rubbing to corners. Interior has penciled booksellers (or binder's) notations, and is otherwise clear and clean, other than slight foxing to the rear of the endpapers (pictured). Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (1809 - 1894) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. A member of the Fireside Poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858). He was also an important medical reformer. In addition to his work as an author and poet, Holmes also served as a physician, professor, lecturer and inventor and, although he never practiced it, he received formal training in law. The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858) is a collection of Holmes' essays originally published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1857 and 1858 before being collected in book form.
