Description: This is a phenomenal and museum worthy Fine Antique Old RENAISSANCE Gothic Wood Carved Corbel, originally from the private chapel of the Earl of Ashbury, in England. Ashbury is a little village on the extreme western edge of the Ridgeway district. The village of Ashbury can trace its history back to the Doomsday Book. The Parish Church and Manor House, built in 1488 still remain. This ornately carved wooden corbel is absolutely a masterpiece and was once a component of a much, much larger wooden structure. This offered artwork was specifically the piece that dedicated the creation of the overall structure, in the year 1546. I have never had a European Renaissance artwork in my gallery, and in terms of quality and historical significance, this is beyond the scope of my previous experiences. This carved wood corbel boasts the profile of a winged cherub, and below it, a lion with a gaping maw, holding a ring with a plaque reading "1546" incised upon it, dedicating the completion of the astounding altar. On the sides of this piece, ornate vine-like scrollwork, and typical 16th century grotesques are visible. This item is very heavy and dense and is approximately 18 1/2 inches tall x 12 inches wide x 11 inches deep. Good condition for nearly 500 years of age, and luckily due to its centuries of preservation in an ancient church, it is in overall good condition, aside from some age-related cracks through the wood, surface scuffing, and edge wear, etc. (Please see photos.) This piece will go to a prestigious auction if it does not receive a fair Offer on here. Provenance documents, visible in Photos 23 & 24 will be included in the sale, along with all other information that I know about this piece. Priced to Sell. Acquired from a private collection in the Bay Area of Northern California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. About this Artwork (Provenance): Calvin boasts protest altar, donor remains anonymous (1968) Calvin College, Grand Rapids, MI "Visitors to the FAC in the next few months will be met in the lobby by an impressively out-of-place altar from the 16th century. The altar, termed a "protest" altar by its donor, was given anonymously to the Calvin student body. It is dedicated to "those who have justly protested, those who now justly protest, and those who will justly protest." In form, purpose, and placement, it is without a doubt symbolic of protest. Begun sometime in the 15th century and completed in 1546, the altar shows the work of perhaps scores of master woodcarvers and the influence of changing trends in religious and artistic thought. The altar was originally part of the private chapel of the Earl of Ashbury. It remained in that family until recently when it was brought to the United States. It was sold by Greenfield Galleries in Seattle to the donor who gave it to Calvin. The carvings may come as a shock to anyone who ever wonders what an English noble would put in his private chapel. The top half is traditional. A religious triptych occupies the center and an angel peers down from the top. But, beginning in the middle of the altar, carvings which depict such secular scenes as a donkey kicking over his cart and a man riding backwards on a pig occupy the eye of the communicant. According to Professor Boeve, the long period over which the carving was done was a critical one in art history. The two types of carving, religious and secular, indicate the turmoil which accompanied the transition from Byzantine abstraction to the genre art of the Low Countries. Valued at $25,000, the fourteen-foot altar will eventually stand in a section of the new addition to the library. Until that time, the Art Department is doing its best to make it look like the rest of the building."
