Description: Fifty Bab Ballads by W. S. Gilbert Antique leather pocket book from 1923 This is a beautiful little leather-bound book, in excellent condition. The only flaw I can see is that at the top of the spine, the leather has worn away a little (see photos). The title and author are engraved in gilt on the front cover and spine, together with a lovely little leprachaun! The spine is tight, the pages are clean and if I look closely I can only see the very occasional small mark. The photos give you a good idea of the condition. The Bab Ballads is a collection of light verses by W. S. Gilbert, illustrated with his own comic drawings. The book takes its title from Gilbert's childhood nickname. They were originally published in a periodical called "Fun" and appeared for the first time together in this form in 1876. This book belonged to my grandfather, whose name is written inside the front cover of the book, along with the date Xmas 1923. He was born in the late 1890s so this book was no doubt a present when he was in his late 20s. I am selling it along with many other vintage and antique books that have been passed down via my late parents. They are a bit of history, and I'm keeping some for sentimental value, but slowly selling off the others.
