The Fernwood Hotel was a large three-story inn located on Canada Street, north of the Central House and a short distance on today’s 9N. It stood in a grove of large pines where the Nordick Hotel and Scotty’s Motel now stand. It was begun in 1890 by the James T. Crandale family of Caldwell and was advertised to have fine accommodations for horses and carriages. It featured shaded porches and rowboats available for use. It was still operated by Earl Crandale in 1913. At that time, accommodations were available for up to 50 guests. It was advertised as having hot and cold tub and shower baths, fine spring water, and was only open seasonally.
