Her voice in youth was a high soprano with a range from C to E flat. With age it lost some of the highest notes but gained in power and richness.Giuseppina Medori , or Josephine and born Josepha Wilmot ( Foligno , September 12 , 1827 - Brussels , December 3 , 1906) was an Italian soprano of Belgian origin . In 1845 she sang in Naples . Between 1852 and 1858 she was in Vienna . Verdi chose her as Leonore in Il Trovatore and as Violetta in La Traviata for its Paris premiere . She starred at the New York Academy of Music in the seasons 1862-1863 and 1863-1864 in Norma , Ernani , Faust , Don Giovanni , Il trovatore , and others. In her portrayal of Lucrezia Borgia , Walt Whitman wrote that Medori had "a voice that makes you hold your breath with surprise and delight ... that pours forth like a raging river."
