As many Ica Stones enthusiasts know almost all the stones are black because the people who have been finding them paint them with shoe-polish making the carvings pop out and to protect the treasure hunters for liability for selling antique artifacts, because then by the antique protection law of Peru they would be prosecuted. This trend of painting was started by Basilio Uchuya 50 years ago to avoid his arrest by Peru authorities and by making few fake stones the whole Ica Stone phenomena was considered as fake. Basilio and later his son and many others sold lot of stones over decades to Dr. Dacier Cabrera Darqura who established the Museo De Piedras Grabadas in the city of Ica.
