Description: Ancient Roman Bronze Dolphin Applique, 1st-3rd Century ADSolid cast bronze applique of a diving dolphin carrying a scallop shell in its mouth. This exquisite piece would have originally been attached as a small handle to a bronze vessel (now lost). The stylization of the dolphin is quite fine with prominent eyes on either side, incised decorative lines above. Prominent fins on both side and atop. Great presence and character. The dolphin is frequently depicted on Greek coinage and carries through though less commonly to Roman coinage. Dolphins are the messengers of Poseidon but are also associate with Aphrodite (often seen riding a dolphin) and romance. Original dark green patina.
