Description: Exquisite 1787 Italian Ink Drawing on Hand Laid Paper of 4 Antiquities Exquisite 1787 Italian Ink Drawing on Hand Laid Paper of 4 Antiquities Click image to enlarge Description High quality original Italian ink drawing showing in exquisite detail four objects of classical antiquity plus a handwritten descriptive caption in Italian which I cannot read, dated 1787 beneath the vase on the right of the drawing, unsigned, about 11 by 6 3/4 inches on a 13 by 81/2 inch sheet of hand laid paper, in a 16 1/2 by 12 inch matte, in fine condition for a drawing of this age. There is a note in pencil along the bottom edge of the drawing in unknown hand indicating this drawing is "Roman." The drawing was likely a preparatory design for an engraver responsible for the creation of all the illustrations that would enhance a future catalog of either a personal or institutional collection of antiquities. As such it is really precise and the objects almost look like photographs. Many 18th century collectors, libraries, and museums published such catalogs.
