Drawing from victim accounts of wartime injury as recorded in compensation claims, Dr Gemma Clark sheds new light on hundreds of previously neglected episodes of violence and intimidation - ranging from arson, boycott and animal maiming to assault, murder and sexual violence - that transpired amongst soldiers, civilians and revolutionaries throughout the period of conflict. The author shows us how these micro-level acts, particularly in the counties of Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford, served as an attempt to persecute and purge religious and political minorities, and to force redistribution of land. Clark also assesses the international significance of the war, comparing the cruel yet arguably restrained violence that occurred in Ireland with the brutality unleashed in other European conflict zones. Author Biography Dr Gemma Clark studied at Queens College, Oxford, where she took a first-class honours degree in History in 2005. Her undergraduate dissertation, on Irish history, won the university-wide Arnold Modern History Prize and she went on to earn a Masters in Historical Research in 2007 and a DPhil in 2011. Dr Clarks doctorate, co-supervised by Professor Roy Foster and Dr Tim Wilson, analyses the range of harmful and frightening acts largely ignored by military histories of the Irish Civil War, and places Irelands conflict in an international perspective. Her first monograph, Everyday Violence in the Irish Civil War, is based on her doctoral research. In 2012, Dr Clark moved to Sydney, Australia to take up her first academic post, the Sarah Sharkey Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Global Irish Studies Centre, University of New South Wales. Her postdoctoral project, A History of Arson in Modern Ireland, further develops her research into hitherto academically neglected acts of violence. She addresses the use of non-lethal arson by a range of social and political groups who have used fire as a form of protest since 1800, contextualising Irish incendiarism in relation to the uses of and responses to arson in mainland Europe. In January 2015, Gemma returned to the UK to take up the post of Lecturer in British and Irish History at the University of Exeter, where she continues her research and teaching on the themes of violence and warfare.
