Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare October 7th, 1936 broadside (single page playbill) and original ticket stub from the ten-night, Pre-Broadway engagement of the COLE PORTER, HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE musical comedy "RED, HOT AND BLUE!" at the Colonial Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. (The production would open October 29th, 1936 at the Alvin Theatre in New York City and run for 183 performances.) ..... The musical starred ETHEL MERMAN, JIMMY DURANTE and BOB HOPE in what had been one of the most publicized billing disputes in Broadway history. All three wanted top billing and finally agreed to formatting their names in the now familiar "X" above the title (shown in scanned image). Featured in the cast were POLLY WALTERS, PAUL and GRACE HARTMAN, VIVIAN VANCE ("I Love Lucy!"), LEW PARKER, GEOFFREY ERRETT, KARL KOHRS, BILL HOUSTON, NORMAN LIND, BETTY ALLEN, FORREST ORR, DOROTHY VERNON, LUCILLE JOHNSON, CECILE CAREY, KAY PICTURE, THURSTON CRANE, BILL BENNER and PRENTISS DAVIS ..... CREDITS: Book by HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE; Music and Lyrics by COLE PORTER ("Anything Goes", "Red, Hot and Blue", "Leave It To Me!", "Du Barry Was a Lady", "Panama Hattie", "Something For the Boys", "Mexican Hayride", "Can-Can", "Kiss Me Kate", "Out Of This World", "Silk Stockings"); Sets designed by DONALD OENSLAGER; Costumes designed by CONSTANCE RIPLEY; Choreographed by GEORGE HALE; Directed by HOWARD LINDSAY; Produced by VINTON FREEDLEY ..... DETAILS: This single page, two-sided playbill measures 5 1/2" X 10" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios. Includes a loose ticket stub from the October 13th, 1936 evening performance ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye" and "When Your Troubles Have Started" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a fold across the middle and light creasing, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
