This particular ‘Riverside Literature Series’ volume also offers a ‘Chronological Table’ and a “Biographical Sketch Of Irving” and was intended for educational purposes in the classroom––hence some of the handwritten notes on the later pages, which, in my opinion, makes the book that much more interesting, because it has had a real life. With the publisher’s copyright of 1891, this edition is quite old and could have been printed in 1891, or no later than the early 1900s. It’s hard to say. Regardless, this “Essays From The Sketch Book” is a wonderful way to add spice to the decor of any room and is in great shape for a late night reading of “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow”. “Essays From The Sketch Book”––Wikipedia: “‘The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.’, commonly referred to as The Sketch Book, is a collection of 34 essays and short stories written by the American author Washington Irving. It was published serially throughout 1819 and 1820. The collection includes two of Irving's best-known stories, attributed to the fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker: "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle". It also marks Irving's first use of the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon, which he would continue to employ throughout his literary career. The Sketch Book, along with James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, was among first widely read works of American literature in Britain and Europe. It also helped advance the reputation of American writers with an international audience.” Always Great Things @ www.poetrope.com Books––Films––Music.
