First Preferred Stock certificate from the William R. Warner & Company issued in 1940 and dated December 20, 1940. Single sheet printed on both sides. Printed in brown and black with ornate border and affixed receipt. Certificate with two signatures of the Company's President Gus Pfeiffer. The certificate was issued to Ernest Hemingway and is signed for by Pfeiffer, his proxy representative on a separate attached document. It resulted from a transfer of stock (presumably from common to First Preferred) originally owned by Hemingway in 1932. Stub affixed and folded vertically, various stamps including "Canceled," very good or better. Warner was owner by Pfeiffer, the uncle of Hemingway's second wife Pauline Pfeiffer, with whom Hemingway got along famously, and who in turn financed Hemingway and Pauline's luxurious lifestyle. Hemingway liked Uncle Gus enough to make him one of the three dedicatees (along with Pauline and his friend Gerald Murphy) of *A Farewell to Arms."Warner-Lambert origins can be traced to 1856 when William Warner opened a drugstore in Philadelphia. After 30 years Warner closed his retail store and began a drug manufacturing business. William Warner & Co. was acquired in 1908 by Henry and Gustavus Pfeiffer. Gustavus. For the next 30 years the company made many acquisitions and by 1939, had 21 marketing affiliates outside the United States and several international manufacturing plants. Gus Pfeiffer had a long and distinguished career in pharmaceutical and allied industries. At one time, his family owned and he served as chairman of the company that would become the Warner-Lambert, a major pharmaceutical company acquired by Pfizer in 2008.
