Description: Hemingway, Ernest - For Whom the Bell Tolls - Charles Scribner’s Sons: New York, 1940 - First Edition / First Printing / First State Dust Jacket - Scribner’s letter “A” present on the copyright page as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. First state dust jacket with no photographer credit below the portrait of Hemingway on the rear panel. “There is nothing else than now. There is neither yesterday, certainly, nor is there any tomorrow. How old must you be before you know that? There is only now, and if now is only two days, then two days is your life and everything in it will be in proportion. This is how you live a life in two days. And if you stop complaining and asking for what you never will get, you will have a good life.” The book has some light shelf wear and rubbing to the spine. The boards remain rather straight and surprisingly clean, the binding is square and firm, the top stain is still dark, and the text block is free of writing internally but has the always present glue darkening on the paste downs. The first state dust jacket has rubbing, edge wear, chips, some careful tape tabs on the verso, and sunning to the spine. That being said it is still an acceptable example and is not price clipped. A solid copy of what most critics consider to be one of Hemingway’s four major novels. This book is a quasi/sort of/should have been Pulitzer Prize winner— that is a complicated and long story which is worth researching if the reader is not aware of the politics of that controversy. Basis for the superb 1943 film adaptation of the same title which starred Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman and which was nominated for nine Oscars including best picture. All books are offered with a full 30 day postage paid return policy. All books which are in dust jackets will be mailed with a clear archival dust jacket protector fitted. Shipping costs can be combined if multiple purchases are made. Items will be packaged and shipped within one business day unless otherwise noted.
