Description: A British Heritage Collectables Commemorative cover hand first day cover signed by Erich Topp and Carl August Landfermann. The cover has the 45p Unity Class Submarine stamp issued as part of the set of 4 ’Submarine ‘ Commemorative Samos issued on 10 April 2001. Postmarked:- Mountbatten, Plymouth, 10.04.2001. This cover has the genuine hand signed signature of both Eric Topp and Karl Landfermann. Erich Topp (1914-2005) was the third most successful of German U-boat commanders of World War II. He was a recipient of the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords of Nazi Germany. He sank 35 ships for a total of 197,460 gross registered tons (GRT) Unit: 1st U-boat Flotilla; 7th U-boat Flotilla; 4th U-boat Flotilla; 11th U-boat flotilla Commands held: U-57; U-552; U3010; U-2513. After the war he served with the Federal German Navy, reaching the rank of Konteradmiral (rear Admiral). He later served in NATO. He was born in Hanover, German Empire and died in SuBen, Germany aged 91. Carl-August Landfermann 1949-2003) was a German chief engineer on a U-boat in World War II and recipient of the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knights Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. He was stationed U-181 under the command of Wolfgang Luth when U-181 made the second longest patrol in U-boat history. When U-181 returned from this patrol Landfermann received the Knight’s Cross of the iron Cross on 27 October 1943 from after GroBadmiral Karl Donitz, after Luth had recommended him for the second time. In this dramatic painting a Short Sunderland, nicknamed by the Germans as the ’Flying Porcupine’ drops depth charges upon a German U-boat. Developed during the 1930s from the ‘Empire’ flying boats it entered service with the RAF in June 1938. After serving successful during World War II the Sunderland went on to take part in the Berlin Airlift before finally retiring from service in 1959.
