Starters can be electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic. The starter can also be another internal-combustion engine in the case, for instance, of very large engines, or diesel engines in agricultural or excavation applications. The following are the two major components of a starter:Contactor: The main function of the contactor is to control the electric current to the motor. A contactor can make or break power to the circuit.Overload Relay: Overheating and drawing too much current can cause the motor to burn out and become practically useless. Overload relays prevent this from happening and protect the motor from any potential danger.A starter is an assembly of these two components, which allows it to turn on or off an electric motor or motor controlled electrical equipment. The starter also provides the necessary overload protection to the circuit. How does the starter motor work? When the driver turns the key or presses the Start button, the solenoid winding is energized. The solenoid plunger moves in the direction of the arrow and closes the solenoid contacts. This connects the battery power to the starter motor (field coils and armature). At the same time, the plunger pushes the starter gear forward through the lever. The gear then engages with the ring gear of the flexplate and turns it over. The flexplate is attached to the engine crankshaft. Most of the starter problems are caused by worn out or burned solenoid contacts, worn brushes and a commutator and worn armature bushings. The symptom of worn out solenoid contacts is when the solenoid clicks but the starter motor doesnt run. When the starter brushes are worn out, the starter motor doesnt make any noises. When front and rear armature bushings wear out, the armature rubs against the field shoes causing the starter motor to run slow and noisy. Many modern starter motors have small ball bearings instead of the bushings. If you want to rebuild the starter motor, the starter motor rebuild kits that include common wear parts are sold online. Signs of Starter Motor Failure1.Buzzing NoiseIf the engine doesnt crank but a consistent buzzing sound that occurs when the key is turned, it usually means that there is a flow of electricity to the starter, but the motor is not actuating. This often means there is not enough electrical power getting to the starter to allow it to properly do its job. This is usually caused by a poorly charged battery or corrosion on the electrical connections within the starting system.2.Loud Clickingsing loud, individual click or a series of clicks that occurs when trying to start a car indicates a bad starter motor. It shows that the starter is getting the necessary electricity needed to actuate, the electric motor inside is not properly responding and has malfunctioned.3.Whirring NoiseThe pinion gear is the part of the starter that actually connects with the flywheel. If it is not engaging with the flywheel it will spin on its own and create a noise that sounds something like "whirr." This often indicates that the starter solenoid has failed.4.Grinding SoundA grinding noise that occurs when trying to start the engine is likely caused by loose starter motor. It could also mean that there are worn or missing teeth on the flywheel or pinion gear which isnt allowing the two gears to properly work together to crank the engine. Installion 1.SAFETY FIRSTDisconnect the battery. You only need to remove the negative cable. This is a good move any time you’re working on the car. NOTE: Many vehicles need to be raised up to reach the starter. On others, obtaining starter access can be difficult. Check your vehicle repair manual for location and replacement details. Always use safety stands and wheel chocks along with protective eye wear. 2.REMOVE THE WIRINGRemove the wiring and positive battery cable from the starter solenoid. 3.REMOVE THE STARTER AND BOLTSRemove the starter retaining bolts. Remove the starter. NOTE: AutoZone will test your starter for free. This will help to verify you are working on the correct problem of the car. 4.COMPARE TO VERIFYCompare the new starter to verify it will fit. Note: Some replacement starters do not appear identical but will have the same fit, form and function as the original (old) unit. Refer to product or installation bulletins packaged with the starter. 5.TRANSFER HEAT SHIELDTransfer any heat shield and/or brackets (if equipped) to the replacement starter. 6.REPLACE WITH NEW STARTERInspect the flywheel teeth for damage. Now, place the new starter in the old starter’s position. Remember the starter shim if applicable. 7.SECURE AND TIGHTENSecure and evenly tighten the starter retaining bolts. NOTE: Do NOT over-tighten. 8.CONNECT THE WIRINGConnect the wiring to the starter solenoid. 9.RECONNECT THE BATTERYReconnect the battery and fire up the engine.
