Description: French and Indian War ( or earlier) placard holder found in the Winchester, Virginia area. This excavated iron placard holder is in the form of a tomahawk head, or more possibly, in the form of a halberd head as halberds at these later dates represented authority more so than an actual weapon. This placard holder would have been placed in front of a General Headquarters or other areas of importance. The “tomahawk head” measures 11 1/4” from the edge of the blade to the tip of the spike, the overall height is 14”. In “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution “ by Neumann and Kravic page 135 no.11 He shows a “Halberd Tomahawk” in almost the exact configuration. He dates it to 1700-1730 (see photo). The placard would have been slipped between the two tangs at the top, like a big paper clip. This is a unique piece, the only one that I have ever seen.
