Description: EMILE GABORIAUMONSIEUR LECOQBayard Jones, illustratorScribner's (1902) Translated from the French original edition. Condition: This Lecoq is somewhat cocked; no jacket; some light stains. Old price mark on front flyleaf. I am going to call it FAIR TO GOOD. Gaboriau was the first French novelist to write detective novels. His character Monsieur Lecoq, private detective, first appeared in the novel, The Widow Lerouge. The novel begins: On February 20, 18-, a Sunday that chanced to be Shrove Sunday, about eleven o'clock in the evening, a party of agents of the safety-service left the police-station at the old Barriere d'Italie. The mission of this party was to explore that vast precinct which extends from the road to Fontainebleau to the Seine, and from the outer boulevards to the fortifications. Commentaries on line: Published in 1869, the fifth novel Gaboriau wrote featuring Lecoq, Monsieur Lecoq takes us back to 1859 and introduces the intrepid detective Lecoq when he is still a young unknown. In addition to meeting Lecoq we encounter other such reappearing characters as young rascal Toto Chupin and the venerable Tirauclair.Excellent, a wonderful addition to Gaboriau's Lecoq series. This book is intriguing to me for the influence this classical detective hero would have on the later formation of Sherlock Holmes as created by Arthur Conan Doyle, and because we know Gaboriau read and enjoyed Poe’s tales with his logical detective Dupin. Although this is the fifth novel that Gaboriau published featuring Lecoq (it was published in 1869), this tale, the first of any about him I ever read, is a prequel that introduces the young detective just starting out, so there was no problem beginning here rather than in the first book, The Lerouge Case, which debuted in 1866. Holy cow! What a ride! Monsieur Le Coq is a young detective trying to solve his first case. The end, though wanting, leaves you open and anxious for the next book. While some twists were foreseeable, the big ones weren't. I was captured by this book from the MOMENT I picked it up! Le Coq has his faults, but they endear him to you. I highly HIGLHLY recommend this book! It was so good! Really a page turner! ______________________(I'll always combine shipping costs and refund any excess shipping charges for multiple-copy book orders.)For all "buy it now" items, please use ADD TO CART if you plan to order more than one item at the same time.______________ WOW!
