Description: This is a beautiful advertising handbill (flyer) promoting the opening of the Original Broadway production of the Tony Award winning Sir ELTON JOHN and LEE HALL musical "BILLY ELLIOT" at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. (The production began previews on October 1st, 2008, officially opened November 13th, 2008 and ran for 1312 performances.) ..... Winner of ten Tony Awards, the musical alternated DAVID ALVAREZ, TRENT KOWALIK and KIRIL KULISH in the title role and starred GREGORY JBARA as "Billy's Dad" and HAYDN GWYNNE as "Mrs. Wilkinson. Others in principal roles included CAROLE SHELLEY as "Grandma", SANTINO FONTANA as "Tony" and DAVID BOLOGNA as "Michael". The music is by Sir ELTON JOHN with book and lyrics by LEE HALL (who wrote the film's screenplay). The musical revolves around motherless Billy, who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes. The story of his personal struggle and fulfillment are balanced against a counter-story of family and community strife caused by the eighties' coal miners' strike in Northern England. Hall's screenplay was inspired in part by A. J. Cronin's novel, The Stars Look Down, and the musical's opening song is an homage. It was directed by STEPHEN DALDRY and choreographed by PETER DARLING, as was the original film ..... CREDITS: Music by Sir ELTON JOHN; Book and Lyrics by LEE HALL; Sets designed by IAN MacNEIL; Costumes designed by NICKY GILLIBRAND; Choreographed by PETER DARLING; Directed by STEPHEN DALDRY; Produced by UNIVERSAL PICTURES STAGE PRODUCTIONS, WORKING TITLE FILMS and OLD VIC PRODUCTIONS in association with THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY .....
