Description: This is a French Antique Drafting Set made out of solid mahogany. (We Believe.) It has a complete set of matching drafting instruments that are in extraordinary condition without rust or corrosion which is so unusual. (It even has the original spanner wrench and a small brass pencil, items which virtually always are long ago lost.) There is a white ruler that has the name, 'Baraban,' and we are guessing that is the maker. Quite often, makers put their company name on a fold out silk covered, padded flap attached to the upper lid but that is missing on this one. The instruments are in their individual velvet slots in a tray that lifts out. Under the tray there are a number of other items, a celluloid protractor, an extension for the large compass, a pencil and pencil leads, and a pencil lead case also filled with leads. The case has a working lock with a replacement key and a brass plate on the lid for engraving an owner's name. (Note the name written in ink on the inside of the lid.) The Set measures 8 x 4.75 x 1.6 inches and, with everything, weighs one pound, 4 ounces. It is unusual to find an antique drafting set made of solid woodland not veneer. We are not familiar with the Baraban Company but the quality of these instruments is very high. We love these old sets for the story they could tell. We noted the missing lid flap and should mention a drying crack on the front, right corner. Those are not serious issues for such a beautiful set, well over 150 years old. At one time they were considered the state the art for any draftsman, architect, designer, or scientist. They make a perfect gift for anyone graduating or serving in one of the related professions. We will ship the Set at no charge at the listed price.
