The Electric Eels erupted from the same blasted milieu that spawned Rocket From The Tombs, The Styrenes, and eventually Pere Ubu and Dead Boys. Amazingly enough, the Eels were the most primitive of the lot, beating out a sociopathic garage-punk mutant that married two-chord frat stomping and atonal free jazz with serious fuck-you attitude. The Eyeball of Hell provides a gloriously lo-fi overview of their fraught career, taking in studio recordings and unreleased loft rehearsals from 1975. Since their 1978 Rough Trade 7-inch "Agitated" b/w "Cyclotron" was their only released recording until the early Nineties (when a posthumous LP compilation briefly hit the racks), most of these tracks come from old cassettes, scraped off and remastered for this set. Luckily, the music of the The Electric Eels thrives on crude sound, adding immeasurably to their already considerable heft. During their 1972–1975 existence the band only performed live five times before splitting immediately after that fifth appearance, due to a fist fight among the members. No surprise there -- The Eels' group dynamic was primarily fueled by inter-band aggression, and the music reflects the fractured relationship of the players, always teetering on the edge of falling apart completely. The lyrics are all teenage taunts and neuroses, perfectly accompanied by the howling guitars and stumbling drums. Pale pubescence's poetry was never so beautifully rendered. A fold-out insert with cool photos, lyrics and lengthy and hilarious liner notes from band members John Morton and Brian McMahon completes the package. The Eyeball of Hell is long out of print, with no reissue in sight. The disc shows very slight wear, but looks great and plays flawlessly.
