A really intimate letter, from a grandmother to her grandson, beginning: “It certainly was a pleasure to get such a nice long letter from you… Mummy wrote me that you had saved all of your money with the plan ahead of going to Europe…”. She gives Buzz much needed advice about his schooling, finances, and travel, and encourages him to learn Spanish and French for his European travels. She’s a little scolding about his lack of planning ahead, “... accommodations have been sold out on every line in every class for months. You really have to plan these trips well ahead of time…”. She mentions Buzz’s fatigue from polio during their last trip together, his interest in Palestine, her work for the United Nations Human Rights Commission, and his interest in starting an institute at Loyola on race relations, etc. Eleanor closes with more about the family, his studies, and writing, etc. “My dear love,” signed “Grandmère,” with her 3 ink corrections to the letter. Folded for mailing, else crisp and clean. A rare chance to get a family letter by Eleanor Roosevelt, signed “Grandmère.”Together with 3 typed letters signed by Anna Roosevelt, to her son Curtis, (2 on official White House stationary). The 3 letters from Anna to Buzz span February 23rd, 1944-March 4th, 1945, 2 are on embossed White House stationary. Her February 18th, 1945 letter was written onboard the USS Quincy accompanying F.D.R., returning from the Yalta Conference, with her detailed description of the formal Russian State Dinner hosted by Stalin, with references to drinking vodka and eating caviar with Stalin, Churchill, and F.D.R. She attended the dinner with Sarah Churchill Oliver and Kathleen Harriman (daughter of US Ambassador to Russia), “... I was lucky enough to go to the formal dinner Stalin gave because Stalin sent word to PaPa (F.D.R.) and Churchill that each of them could bring ten in their party… PaPa decided the gals should go…”. Of the conference, she notes, “PaPa has gone thru it all remarkably well. The only times he was really tired were when he had to go to one of the formal Russian dinners- after meetings and the big conference for some six hours previously…”. She goes on to describe the drunken meals, “... lunch and dinner have vodka and at least four different kinds of wine offered… with caviar, sliced raw fish, then sturgeon, then soup, then game or meat with potatoes, then a sweet and coffee.” She notes "There must have been 36 people at that dinner. Stalin had PaPa on his right and Churchill on his left. Stalin’s interpreter, Mr. Pavlov, translated for PaPa and all the Russians, and sat on PaPa’s left; Churchill’s interpreter translated for all the British, and sat on Churchill’s left. I sat between the British Ambassador to Moscow, Sir A. Clark Kerr and General Alexander…,” followed by her account of doing shots of vodka with Stalin and Churchill during toasts, noting, “the Russians certainly know how to ‘dish out’ the hospitality! I particularly liked Marshall Stalin. He was in grand form that evening, and his toasts (except for the serious, formal ones) were most amusing. We sat down to dinner at 9 and finished at 12:45!... This takes you loads and loads of love, big boy- and the big, big hope that all is going well with you.” Signed in pencil, “Your, Mom.”Her February 23rd, 1944 letter on White House stationary has a typed heading, “DO NOT LEAVE LIEING AROUND FOR PEOPLE TO READ!”, and refers to Eleanor traveling to hospitals and camps in the Caribbean for F.D.R., and noting “Pa Pa” (F.D.R.) is at Hyde Park- secretly of course- but will be back in a week…”. There’s a bunch of wonderful personal details about family, travel, schooling, his dog Ensign, etc. She closes, “Loads of love, darling, from us both, [signed] Mum,” with a 4-line manuscript postscript. Her March 4th, 1945 letter on White House stationary, written weeks after her attendance, with F.D.R., at the Yalta Conference with Stalin and Churhill, with references to their return travel with “PaPa” (F.D.R.), much news of family illness, travel, the secret service, noting, “PaPa and Grandmere have gone to Hyde Park for the week-end… Did you see the story about me in this weeks Life magazine… I’m thankful this was a friendly story! Pops and I send you loads of love- and an extra home-coming hug from you,” signed, “Mom.”An absolutely fascinating peek into one of the most important families in American political history, including a very intimate letter from Eleanor to her grandson, and 3 wartime letters from Anna to her son Curtis, including 1 about the Yalta Conference. These letters came from the estate of Curtis Roosevelt, who at the time was living in Massachusetts (more about him below). A unique opportunity to acquire personal family letters from the Roosevelts, during WWII, and the family’s time at the White House. The letters are in very good condition, folded for mailing. Please examine photographs to help best assess condition. Thanks. The recipient of these letters was Curtis Roosevelt, the eldest grandson of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Born on April 19, 1930, he is the son of Anna Roosevelt and Curtis Bean Dall. Curtis and his sister Anna were popularly known as "Sistie" and "Buzzie" during their childhoods. Curtis legally changed his last name from Dall to Roosevelt in later years.Curtis and his sister lived in the White House from September 1933 to November 1935, then visited frequently thereafter. He was there for Christmas 1936 through FDR's Second Inauguration in 1937. He was also there for Christmas 1939. Curtis and his sister returned to live in the White House with their mother Anna in 1944-1945 until FDR's death, although Curtis was at boarding schools during this period. In 1948, he accompanied his grandmother Eleanor Roosevelt to Paris, where Mrs.Roosevelt was attending a session of the United Nations General Assembly as a delegate from the United States. After graduating from the Southwestern Military and Naval Academy at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Curtis attended Loyola University in Los Angeles and graduate studies at Columbia University. He held numerous positions in advertising and education during his professional career, including vice president for public affairs for The New School of Social Research, and he was regional director of the National Citizens Council for Better Schools. In 1964, Curtis joined the Public Information Department at the United Nations as Chief of the Non-Governmental Organizations Section. He assisted civil, labor, church and other nongovernmental groups (NGOs) interested in United Nations activities. In more recent years, Curtis became a popular speaker and appears frequently in documentaries about his grandparents. In 2008, he wrote his memoir, Too Close to the Sun: Growing up in the Shadow of my Grandparents Franklin and Eleanor. He died in 2016.Anna Roosevelt (1906-1975) was the eldest child and only daughter of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. She served as FDRs Aide-de-camp at the Yalta Conference, and assisted him as his advisor during World War II. She was an author, and worked in newspapers and radio. In 1963 JFK appointed her to the Citizens Advisory Council on the Status of Women. She also served for several years as vice-chairman of the President's Commission for the Observance of Human Rights. We have been selling on eBay for more than 2 decades.
