Egyptian Replica Sekhmet Lioness Head 24kt gold-plated Clip-on Earrings for MMA

Description: Many pieces of jewellery reproduced from the treasures of the tomb of Tutankhamun were made for the Egyptian Exhibition at the Museum of Metropolitan Art in New York in 1978. But, they are not easy to find now and rarely come on the market. These exquisite earrings have long since lost their informative packaging but they are an accurate representation of the face of the goddess Sekhmet, the 'Powerful One', the lion-headed daughter of the sun-god Ra. Sekhmet was variously thought to preside over wars, plagues and healing and her statue, found in Tutankhamun's tomb, was described in the exhibition catalogue as one of the greatest rarities of Egyptian art. The exhibition itself was a major coup for the USA and was of lasting historical and political significance. The beautiful face depicted on the earrings has the nobility of both goddess and lioness and the earrings are still wearable, stylish and relevant today. They are in excellent condition with no visible wear to the rich 24kt gold electroplating and secure clips.They could also be a very classy way to signal support for the England women's senior football team!Please note that the earrings were not included in the original exhibition catalogue but the identical brooch and pendant were. These pieces had a MMA signature on the reverse but the earrings do not, presumably because there was insufficient space (MMA was signed on a large cartouche on the back of the brooch and pendant). However, on very close inspection, I have discovered whilst photographing the earrings that they are very faintly stamped MMA . I cannot say for certain but possibly the earrings were added to the range at a later date or perhaps only prototypes were ever made. Also, please note that the lovely vintage pin shown in the final image is not included with the earrings. It is by Yves St Laurent and goes beautifully with the lionesses.
