This deity is usually depicted as a canine or a man with a dog's head. Archaeologists have concluded that the animal that was revered as Anubis is an Egyptian canine, the African jackal. Like many ancient Egyptian deities, Anubis has assumed different roles in different contexts. Pictured as a protector of tombs early in the First Dynasty (c. 3100 - c. 2890 BC), Anubis was also responsible for mummification.
