Description: This is a small hardback book of 158 pages and 103 high quality colour photographs and is a translation from the Italian version of 1972.There are many timeless art treasures from various periods of the Egyptian civilization discussed and illustrated in this book. There are famous as well as less famous artworks portrayed. The famous ones include the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, the portrait head of the beautiful Nefertiti, the throne of Tutankhamen (Tutankhamon), the temples of Abu Simbel, as well as frescoes from the Valleys of the Kings and the Narmer Palette. Lesser known art treasures include cosmetic trays (probably mostly used by women), geese friezes from the tomb of Itet, a wooden statue of Ka-aper, a cosmetic spoon of a swimming girl, a harp figurehead, a painted bare-breasted dancer, a beautiful girl portrayed as a gift-bearer, alabaster figures, a naked female figure carved from wood, a figurine of the goddess Sekhmet, an unusual gilded and decorated funerary mask from the Greek period, a head of a pharaoh who has yet to be identified, a basalt torso of a royal statue who has yet to be identified, a bronze statuette of the goddess Bast and many others. One of the most interesting photographs is that of the dwarf Somb and his family. The kids appear to be dwarfs as well but his wife was of normal size and quite attractive. They lived thousands of years ago but their statues look as though they were only constructed yesterday. Its an old book but I believe there are newer editions. Its not comprehensive but there is a short text for each photograph as well as a running dialogue throughout the book explaining fragments of the great history of the Egyptian civilization. At the end of the book is a chronological outline of the history of Egypt, followed by a very short bibliography and finally an index to the illustrations provided in the book. I recommend it to newcomers and students of Egyptology.
