Stamped 'Michael Aldred Facsimile' on the back. --------------------------------------------------THE LOWDEN FORGERY Perhaps the most well-known GB stamp forgery of the 20th century.These forgeries were produced by John Stewart Lowden, a stamp dealer who traded under the name of George Ellis of Villiers Street, Strand, London. They were produced by photo-lithography on unwatermarked paper, being affixed to thick parcel paper with a forged Jersey cancel. Compared to genuine stamps, their colour is slightly paler and the sharpness of the design is inferior. It is thought that the forgeries date from around 1911. Lowden had 2,679 £1.00 forgeries, which he sold to another stamp dealer, Jonas Lex, for the sum of £830. Lex initially had no reason to suspect the authenticity of the stamps because Jersey was a port where tobacco was imported into the UK and the £1.00 Green stamp was routinely affixed to parcels of tobacco to defray tobacco duly. It was only after examining the stamps carefully that Jex realised that he had been duped. He reported the matter to the police. Lowden was later arrested. At the subsequent trial Lowden was found guilty of forgery and was sent to prison for three years. Only a small number of the forgeries appear to have survived.
