Collector's Notes is included. James Monroe, who lived from 1758-1831, was the 5th President of the U.S., 1817--1825. Monroe attended WILLIAM and MARY COLLEGE and took the oath of allegiance at VALLEY FORGE. He later practiced law in Fredericksburg. Monroe was best friends with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Best known for the MONROE DOCTRINE, which he proclaimed near the end of his second term, in 1823, the document was a warning to the nations of EUROPE to stay out of the affairs of both North and South America. Monroe came to the Presidency as well prepared as any man ever to occupy the Oval Office. he had been an officer in the REVOLUTIONARY WAR, a U.S. Senator, Ambassador to FRANCE, SPAIN, and BRITAIN, Governor of Virginia, and both U.S. Secretary of State and Secretary of War. Monroe was the first President to occupy the rebuilt White House after its burning by the British in the War of 1812. Under Monroe, Florida was annexed from Spain, the Missouri Compromise established the geographic limits of slavery and forestalled Civil War, Western expansion became a reality with the blazing of the Santa Fe Trail, Oregon was wrested from Spain and Russia, a true national banking system began to emerge, and the permanent boundary between Canada and the U.S. was established. An economic boom during Monroe's initial years as President helped name his Presidency "the Era of Good Feeling." William Penn Cresson's masterful JAMES MONROE is the classic, definitive biography of both the President and the person. 577 pages, including Notes and an Index. Combined shipping is available.
