Born at Argenteuil in 1882, Braque was the son and grandson of a house painter. At age 17, he went to work in his father's business. In 1900, he moved to Paris and in 1903, he studied at the Ecole des Baux-Arts. Braque went to Honfleur with RAOUL DUFY in 1904, and to Arles, in 1906. In 1907, he exhibited at the Salon des Independants when seven of his paintings were accepted. In 1911, he spent the summer with Picasso. Like his friends, Friesz and Dufy, he showed a preference for the Riviera, Provence and ports near the Spanish frontier. He later came under the influence of CEZANNE. Braque served in World War I, suffering from a head wound. By 1918, his paintings were copious still lifes. In 1920, he exhibited his first sculpture, a standing nude. When the Germans invaded France in 1939-40, he escaped to Limousin and then to the Pyrenees. Braque's works were later exhibited in London, Brussels, Chicago, Amsterdam, Venice, Basel, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco. Braque died in 1963 in Paris.
